Google Maps is the most popular web tool for viewing map and getting directions. It’s powerful, yet easy to use. You just have to enter two locations and within a moment it will show you the path between the locations. Getting directions is the main feature of Google maps that people use every time they need to know the routes. Google has been continuously adding new features since the launch of Google Maps and today, it’s ‘Helicopter View’ that has been added as a new feature to the Google Maps.
‘Helicopter View’ – as the name suggests, it lets you fly over the driving directions routes in 3D. It will make you feel like you’re flying over the roads on the map. The best thing about ‘Helicopter View’ is, it shows the 3D view of the route so that you could decide what route to take before you actually go to the road trip.
How to use Google Maps Helicopter View
You just need to go to Google Maps and type in a route that you want to see and click ‘Get Directions’. After that, look for the 3D Play button that should pop up next to "Driving Direction to ……..". Take a look at the screenshot above to find the 3D button. As soon as you click the 3D button, the map will switch to Earth view and automatically start flying you along your recommended route.
Clicking anywhere on the 3D preview will stop the flight and lets you explore the surrounding area in 3D by clicking and dragging the map. You can resume the flight by clicking on the ‘Play’ button in the lower left of the 3D view. Also, in the left panel, it will tell you which step you are on while you’re flying along your route.
You’ll need Google Earth View Plugin to try the ‘Helicopter View’. Without the plugin, the ‘3D’ button won’t pop-up in the left panel. If you don’t have the plugin on your PC, you can download Google Earth View Plugin from here. So from now on, next time whenever you plan a road trip, don’t forget to check the driving directions from the Helicopter using Google Maps .
